Did you already install iTunes on your computer? I can't remember whether or not I had to do that first for my iPhone or not. Mine does work as you say though. As soon as I connect it, iTunes launches automatically.

Although I retired from the position of community technical advisor, this looks like a case in which one could use some technical advice. So here's the technical advice (...) Apple is shit, therefor your device is shit. Return the device to the store where you bought it and get a similar device from another brand. If they won't take it back you can threaten them with pseudo-legal repercussion. Of course you won't really sue them since you can't pay a lawyer because you blew all your money on the device, but they don't know that. If aformentioned method doesn't turn out to lead to wanted result, use a hammer. You can apply it to the top of Apple device at speed, creating enough impulse resulting in you smashing it into a large number of pieces of relavitely small proportion. You might run the risk of blowing your chances to get a refund, but it'll make you feel really good... Hammer can also be applied to the top of store manager. It might even lead to getting a large discount on new device. Results may vary. Former technical advisor at your service. You're welcome.
