I run my system with the sides off the case. This means the inside of the case is near room temperature, which seems to help. The video card fan runs at a slower rate, and so the noise from the case ends up being less.

ah cool cool, thanks for the links ^_^
after cleaning out the shit that was in the CPU heatsink ( it was like a duststorm in there) the temps dropped a good 30*c and the CPU fan speed jumped up antoher 900rpm... i was able to run online for around 7 races before it froze up on me agian.. but the computer has been on for the last day and a half doing a defrag . so that might of caused it, i'm not sure.
if it still occurs after the Xaser is running... i got no idea what else to do. the place that is swapping everything over for me is going to put the GPU through another stability test, aswell as try running shift for a while and see what happens.. the guy thats doing it has a copy of shift also, and has had a few problems with it aswell. so he might know what is causing it .

Mercedesclkgtr why in the world are you not using 100% fan speed? And now you see a 30 degree temperature drop on your CPU and you still freeze? I really think you are running the game on to high graphics settings and your graphics card is having trouble keeping up. Have you tried running FRAPS and see what fps you are getting? I will bet you they are under 30 most of the time. If you do not have FRAPS installed try it out and tell us what fps you are seeing when playing online. www.fraps.com/download.phpPoul

Great pictures Paul. the problem is his cables are covering the graphics cards air intake - anyone can see that on his pictures. And those fans in the case are all dusty - that is clear to see. By the way Mercedesclkgtr - I forgot: Yes the max Tcase temp for your processor is 72 degrees, but that is the CPU temperature and not the core temperature (Tjunction). For your processor its: Tcase Max 72c, and Tjunction Max 100c. I would think you are quite safe when playing Shift - it is not that demanding a game - pulling 100% load Poul

exchange thermal conductance paste between CPU and CPU-cooler, if u dont do that more than 1 jear ago. u well get a better conduction of heat, means better cooling

Well try removing that IDE cable from the air intake and see what happens.
See the red arrow Paul draw in that last picture of your case? That IDE cable along with the others are TOTALLY blocking all air intake.

Maybe the bottle neck is your hard drive causing the system to freeze, IDE drives are old school and really slow compare to a SATA hard drive....... Just a thought

You could buy a "round IDE cable" (do a web search).

i've got the external drive, a 500GB drive and a 1.5TB drive that i think is a sata drive. the game is loaded on the 1.5TB drive that has around 300GB free.
i'll wait untill the xaser is up and running on tuesday before i touch anything else. the IDE cable that seems to be blocking 1/4 of one of the intakes. i have seen the round IDE cables around.. i'll switch it over when everyhting is transfered over.
we shall see on tuesday night if its solved the problem or not.

Hi!
I think everyone already said most things... Since you had results improving the cooling, its almost for sure a problem related to it. But you have to consider the possibility that something "burned" and your processor or graphics cars; also, you may consider the possibility that a memory stick may be with problems.
These problems suck... It can be so many things! :S

ok well after getting the case changed over it was still freezing up. the techies that swapped everything over for me said that it could of been faulty RAM ( the 4GB that i had in the PC were a cheap brand that came with the original PC gear) and was a good possability of being the cause. so with the RAM replaced i'm just about to test it out and see if it was the ram. if it still freezes now then the motherboard could also be at fault. as we had problems with the PC recognizing the 8GB that i wanted installed. nice shiny case
