I'm using Adobe Premier Pro, and one of the functions is to export the currently displayed frame as a .BMP image file. I assume other video programs have a similar function.
An alternative would be to play the avi file, pause at the desired frame, then use alt-print-screen to copy the frame to clipboard.
Yet another alternative would be to use fraps to capture frames, and attempt to capture a frame during the time between the pause menu and returning to free roam.
