@scud - you're still alive my friend! What have you been up to? Still being a smartass i see But you are, in fact, correct. @dmitri - and if i were a male, how would that change things? Upgrading is something i've been thinking of for some time, before Run ever existed. Trust me, i wasn't upset at all at not being able to run NFS Run. As Scud so succinctly put it, i 'don't give a shit', lol. If you told me i couldn't run Assassins Creed, then i would be upset! And are all games changing? I thought it was just an announcement for NFS Run? But they all will sooner or later anyway i guess. Bandit (PC/PS3/4) - yeah, basically what Scud said. There's nothing wrong with my current PC, but i would like to be up to date. One game series i've been following since it first came out is Assassin's Creed, and i'm sitting on the recommended settings for the current game, running at max settings. With another game due out later this year, i want to be able to play it, and have it run well. I don't want to be able just to run it 'ok'. I want it to look and sound and work as it was intended to, and that's damn good! I don't want to be like with TDU, and have to upgrade before i could run it. I think you're suggestion is a great one, and for now, it's probably the better choice for me. And i value your opinion With the excellent info Poul has found (thank you again!), that site looks really good, and it looks like the one to go with for bits and pieces, which i'll probably have to get at some time anyway. So, Poul, i've written down everything you said But i do have another question...and that's about speakers. At the moment i have 2 little ones on my desk. I love them dearly, they have been with me for many, many years, and they work great, bless their little hearts But i would love to be able to better hear the deep burble of a lovely V8. Or the sound of my dagger going through someone's neck. Now, without turning my room into a home theater, any suggestions for speakers? And while we're at it, a mic?

Speakers are personal preference depending on you and the kind of music you listen to and how you want it to sound.... I have a set of Creative Lab, surround sound 5.1 speakers, I have 4 small speakers on the top and a BOOM box the floor... and they rock the house . and they were cheap $79.00 US..... I would retire those old speakers that you like so much

DID I MENTION NFS RUN IN THIS THREAD? NO! I was just reciting your words and I was talking about DX11 games!!! It is your ”smarta*s” Scud who brought it into this thread by not carefully reading my posts. There are a lot of games that will need DX11/Win7. And it looks like you have an XP and judging your hardware components one does not need to finish High School to see that you will not be able to run almost any of the new games. What about Battlefield 3? What about the majority of games planned for the end 2011/beg 2012? There are no guesses, it is a reality. I do not work for Black Box, and I do not force anyone to have the same ideas that I have. I was just saying!

Without a doubt the new Z68 chipset motherboards are the way to go if one wants to upgrade PC and can´t wait for the new 2012 socket that will probably be a lot more expensive. The reason being Intel´s Smart Response Technology. You can actually give your old hard disk a new life and speed it up by x4 by using a small SSD like Intel´s new Larson Creek 20GB SSD as cache memory. If you have a lot of games installed and you play them all on a regular basis, the Smart Response Technology is really a nice feature. If you only play one game at a time, then a 64 GB deticated SSD will be better, but read this review of how it works and see. www.anandtech.com/show/4329/intel-z68-chipset-smart-response-technology-ssd-caching-reviewPoul Edited: remember that the Vertex 3, which they are comparing against, is a high end SSD that costs a damn lot more than Intel´s 20 GB SSD.

Thx for the info Poul.
But I just wanted to add, that even Intel SSD used as an extra HD for system files will significantly improve loading time of the system, web browsing, and most of the day-to-day PC activities.

The problem with that is that a dedicated SSD for your operating system will take up a lot of space. My 80 GB SSD is almost always full. With 2-3 games installed, it does not take long to fill up the capacity. If one bought a Z68 motherboard and a small SSD like that Intel 20GB, you will get just as fast boot times, but you will have your hard drives capacity. So if you have an old hard disk of 500GB, you can put every game you have onto that and still get almost SSD speed.
To quote from Anandtech:
" the $110 adder for an Intel SSD 311 can easily double the performance of even the fastest hard drive you could put in there. The most obvious win here is the lighter user that only runs a handful of applications on a regular basis. As our tests have shown, for light workloads you can easily get the performance of an X25-M G2 out of a fast hard drive + an SSD cache. Even gamers may find use in SSD caching as they could dedicate a portion of their SSD to acting as a cache for a dedicated games HDD, thereby speeding up launch and level load times for the games that reside on that drive. The fact that you can use any SSD as a cache is nice since it gives you something to do with your old SSDs when you upgrade."
Now I think that says it all. If you have enough money to go buy a 250-300 GB SSD, then this is not for you - if not then this is.

@monster, cheers mate. Though it's only one small room, not the entire house i intend to rock . And no, it's only for the PC, only for games. Not for music or movies. @poul- i'm going to start by saying, i have very little idea what on earth all that means. I'm sorry i just don't know what that means for me, and what i will and will not be able to do. Pretend i know nothing about computers, lol No, i don't have lots of games installed. At the moment i have 4, one of them NFSMW (doesn't take up that much room). And my PC runs fine. Doesn't take long to start up etc. I check if things need to be cleaned up or deleted, or hard disk to be defragmented. I'm sure there more that could be done, but that is the extent of my abilities. @dmitri, you said that because i was female (what does have to do with DX11?), and that i made a thread shortly after replying to the specs needed for NFS Run, you were suspicious. So i wanted to explain that it had nothing to do with Run. That's all. My repy to you was not serious or nasty. Just a couple of funny comments. Thank you for confirming that indeed it is most games that will soon need DX11 and Win7. Though i knew this would come sooner or later. And indeed, it is clear that my current system will not be able to run them. But shout at me like that again, and my next reply to you won't be so polite.

What is it you do not understand? Have you tried to read the reviews on those links? You do know what boot and load times mean, as well as read and write speed - right? What is there not to understand by that? Intel´s Smart Response Technology (SRT) is a no brainier for those who can not afford an expensive Solid State Disk (SSD) where you can have all 4-5 games installed you play. Remember that new games are very big these days - not like NFS Most Wanted. I just do not understand what there is NOT to understand If you get virtually the same performance with Intel´s SRT a 20GB SSD as compared to a Vertex 3 - then it seems pretty obvious to me. But let us talk about this some more when you finally want to go buy a new motherboard and CPU. You can upgrade to Windows 7 now and buy a new graphics card and then add more in later. Just remember if you buy something like a GTX560 Ti, it will be bottlenecked by your current system. But I guess you can live with that. Poul

DID I MENTION NFS RUN IN THIS THREAD? NO! I was just reciting your words and I was talking about DX11 games!!! It is your ”smarta*s” Scud who brought it into this thread by not carefully reading my posts. Excuse me? Hold up, let me read that again. Excuse me? As a matter of fact I did bring up NFS Run, after you posted a direct link of a post Kat made which was in a thread about - guess what - NFS Run. It seems to me that be a perfectly reasonable response after she mentioned in her first post that her upgrades are unrelated to the announcement of NFS Run (and you posting that link). Also, what is it that you exactly mean with " your smartass Scud"? I'm pretty sure that would've slipped by me if I was not reading your posts carefully. Kat doesn't own me. By no means am I property of anyone and I am the sole being who decides my course of action. If you don't get my lighthearted and perfectly harmless jokes and got offended by anything I said or anything that was a direct result of that... ...good, because I still don't give a f**k. (...) Now I see that there has been some misunderstanding concerning Kat's gender and her (dis)abilities to judge any advances in technology as a direct result of that. To any who didn't get my female psyche joke, let me explain why that joke is so f**king brilliant. Kat is a female. She knows that, I know that and she knows that I know that. Comparing her psyche to that of a so called "regular female" jokingly implies that she can't be categorized as such. This doesn't per say mean that Kat is a dude since that remains undisclosed. It could very well mean that she is an animal, an inanimate object, an alien, a giant killer robot, a politician or just plain f**king crazy (which seems to be the most likely implication since it's Kat we're talking about). The geniusness of the joke is that - besides being funny - in some cases it causes a delayed reaction because it takes time for some to figure out what is actually being said (or being red), adding to the funny. Kat, I don't think Dimitri was implying anything about your abilities related to you being a 25-year old woman that walks upside down all the time. My best guess is that he didn't fully get the joke and he just misplaced an enter in his first reply. It was just the suspicion due to the timeframe in which the two mentioned posts were made. The fraud investigation stuff was just a personal added touch. (...) Anyway, back on topic about beefing up your PC. I'm not really an expert on that so I'll leave most of that to Poul. However, I did find something. If you really want to beef up that computer of yours, maybe this might help. Will set you back a bit more (around $700 AUS) but I guarantee it packs a lot of beef for that price.

Poul, i'm sorry i can't explain myself well. Yes, i read and i watched those vidoes, but to me, i really have no idea what he's going on about. Basically it's like i said in my PM, instead of giving me a bunch of figures and things, tell me what i will be able to do with it. I'll give you an eg. Say you have a horse and need to buy stuff for it to ride it etc. I tell you that you need a full size bridle with a french snaffle bit, with fixed sides. Then you'd want a dressage saddle, one with a narrower twist, and medium sized knee rolls and depth seat. You also need one with a Y-girthing system, and stay away from CAIR. As far as rugs go, buy something medium denier. What does all that mean to you? Now if i told you that you needed the french snaffle bit (the metal bit that goes in the mouth) because this is gentle and kinder than other bits, because it doesn't hit the top of the horse's mouth when you use the reins (bits of leather you hold), so the horse will be happier when you ride him. And that a narrow twist means the middle part of the seat (where you sit), and if it's too wide, you won't be able to wrap your legs around the horse, which means your aids (for go and turn) won't be as effective. Wrapping your legs around the horse also helps you keep a better position, so you don't have to work so hard to use your legs. And denier is strengh of the rug, and if there's too much of it, it means that rug is stronger, and you sacrifice the rug's ability to breath, and therefore if you get something with a lot of denier, the horse is more likely to get hot or sweat, so you don't want this if youre horse feels the heat. You can then think "but my horse doesn't get hot and he is really hard on his rugs (he rips them easy, there's lots of branches they can get ripped on), so i would need to buy a rug with more denier for strenght and i don't mind the material doesn't breath as well because he doesn't get hot." Does that makes sense as to what i'm getting at? That quote...yes i get it, the 311 can double the performance of the fastest hard drive. Brilliant. But what does that mean for me? Will i will be able to install 50 games at the same time? Or 500? Or 15? Or 5? Because i don't need something that will be able to run 15 games at a time. So if this is the case, i know this 311 isn't the one for me, because i don't need this much 'power'. See what i mean? Tell me what the thing can do for me, so i can decide if i really do need it. I have no idea what these components can and can't do. And i don't want to get something that's capable of much more than i would use it for. OR on the other hand, not be able to do something that i do want it for. I can see and i understand that this chipset is obviously excellent. But why would someone buy it? I know it's hard sometimes explaining to people who have no idea. I hope you understand a little better what i'm getting at, because i appreciate your help.

Hi Kat, i dont understand what alot of the technical terms means either without spending hours searching and reading, but i do know to trust Poul when it comes to computers. He definely understands how to get the most for your money.
With the components he suggested, you wouldnt have to upgrade for some years and the pc would pretty much do whatever you want it to. For the prices, it would be hard to beat. Not just gaming, but everyday computing.
