Note that direct2drive will charge your credit card as soon as you place the order, even though the starter pack info on EA's web page mentions that your credi card will not be charged until July 19. Also, direct2drive does not provide any phone contact at all, no phone number at the web site, and the phone number on your credit card bill (required by law), only directs you back to the web site or if you're in law enforcement. to leave a voice mail).

So if they offered the game for $20.00 would you considered on buying it? Why am I not surprised? Seriously, I knew that EA and completely free wouldn't fit in the same sentence. So the greedy bastards are after your money again. Screw this you can't go further unless you pay. Game developers should cut this bullcrap and just f**king set a fixed price for a finished product. Needless to say that I won't be getting World Online. There's better stuff on the way, so I'll just wait for TDU2 and see what Criterion makes of Hot Pursuit.

So if they offered the game for $20.00 would you considered on buying it? If EA made a solid and finished game (preferably boxed) for €20, I would actually consider buying it. I'd wait for some reviews from other players though. But the way things are now I just couldn't be bothered. The whole free-to-play thing was and is basically false advertisement if you really think about it. The way I see it they're just releasing a game (which might yet get expanded) and the first ten levels just serve as a demo for it. EA should call it that. But yeah, as the way it stands now there's no chance in hell. When it comes to online racers World Online will without a doubt get its ass handed to it by TDU2 (which is massive, boxed and has a fixed price to it). As far as the NFS franchise goes, the new Hot Pursuit is coming too soon for World Online and I think the latter might lose out on that respect as well... ...and I've made it no secret either that I think that the old Hot Pursuits (when it comes to concept and gameplay) are in every way better than what has been put out since Underground. And since World basically is a sum of Most Wanted and Carbon I'm not that eager to spend money on it, even just €20.

The hot pursuit 2: www.needforspeed.com/game/need-speed-hot-pursuit-2I think was the epic fail of all nfs games (even worst than undercover) imo. I really hope the new one will be something like the first one. Spiko

I agree with Spiko! The first NFS for me was www.needforspeed.com/game/need-speed-porsche-unleashed and compared to that Hot Pursuit 2 was really lame. It didn't have what I thought NFS game should have: Ability to build up your own fleet of cars with upgrades and visual customization. Luckily Underground brought that back to the series and Underground 2 added another important thing: The open world which I now also consider one of the main characteristics of the series. In my opinion true NFS game has performance upgrades, visual tuning, open world and a storyline. Without those, it's just a racing game sold under NFS label. Jussi

taking any chances with 3rd party sellers The third party sellers only sell unlock codes, all the downloading is from EA's web page.

About the whole which NFS doesn't belong in the series subject I have to agree that I replayed the first HP (a lot) more often than the second one. Passing it as an epic fail and as a disgrace to the series I can't agree with though. The second one had some nice environments, a cool car roster and the cops weren't completely bitch (like in Carbon). And Jussi, I like Porsche Unleashed too and I totally respect your opinion. I just couldn't disagree more when going into the whole customizing stuff. To claim that upgrades and open world is the sole definition of what makes NFS what it is, you're basically saying that the first four original releases aren't true NFS games. That's a bit contradicting in itself to say the least. I got nothing against a bit of customization as long as it's done with a little bit of respect for the actual cars (like Porsche), instead of being just a blatant Fast and the Furious rip-off (Underground). Only one party has the power to put an end to this discussion, and that's Criterion. They've been pushing all the right buttons so far and I think they might be able to come up with a game that we can all be happy with (one with dual careers, some good chasing and no list full of stupid slow cars). But getting back to World Starter Pack deal, isn't the free-to-play part just a demo in disguise? It all adds up. First ten levels free and purchase more levels and DLC seems like the modern day equivalent of demo to full game and boxed expansion packs.

Note that Live For Speed includes a free to play demo, not that unusual until you look at the online stats and find that over 1/2 of the online players are free demo players, the way it's been since 2003. It's also relatively popular, with over 1000 players online at a time during peak hours.
Getting back to World's starter pack, I'll probably buy one, but I suspect that if the game survives more than 6 months, there will be more packs. Keep in mind that most NFS games sell in the millions; Underground 2 and Most Wanted - 9 million each (this was the heyday of PC based racing games), Carbon and ProStreeet - 5 million each, I'm not sure for the later games, but my guess at least 2 to 3 million copies for all the recent NFS games, at $40 to $50 per game (pc versus console), ... , so a $20 starter pack for well less than 1 million players is relatively small revenue for a NFS game. I'm not sure how low budget this in-house effort is though.

Me, just because I don't do online purchases.
If it can be had via disc, I'd go for it.

Well, I'm planning on a little series of races aimed to people who can not get past the level 10 cap and this time there will actually be prizes too. But first I need to make a list of stuff that is available for free players. Have you already reached level 10? Jussi
