I am wanting to upgrade my GTS 250 video card.
Ive always had Nvidia cards and i dont know much about ATI cards. Im thinking about getting a GTX 285 for a little over $300.00, but my motherboard is crossfire capable and ive noticed ATI cards are a little cheaper.
Is it worth buying 2 ATI cards for the price of(or close to) the price of the Nvidia GTX 285? If so, which ATI card would be best?

Hi mate!
I will probably buy a ATI 5850 for me... Its a little over 200 Euros here and beats the GTX 285 on most tests... Adicionally is already DirectX 11... Since the next NFS Shift Patch resolves the problems with ATI cards, I believe that is the best buy.
Cya!

At newegg.com, the 5850 is almost as much as the GTX 285. How about 2 of these...
XFX HD-577A-ZNFC Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail
...compared to a single GTX 285? Would there be that much more performance?
I want to stay under $400.00.

Well my idea would be to get an HD5870 for that kind of money, or two HD4890's but my PC uses enough Watts already Perhaps that GTX 285 ain't such a bad idea, apart from that GTX 295 idea Goodluck, Bandit PS: what's your PC's specs?

Hey Very good question there Aaron. You still gaming in 1680x1050? If so then a couple of 5770 would proberly be faster than a 5850, but then again do you really need that much FPS? If you are planning on playing Shift and the next online NFS, then you should perhaps wait and see what the future holds I do think that 2 of these - link - when overclocked would be an awesome buy. But they need to be overclocked and you gain 4890 performance out of them. Double warranty - nice offer I think. Read the comments in the link too. You could also do with 2 5750´s - but not unless you overclock. Edited: When I wrote 4890 performance - that is each 5770 and not in Crossfire mode. I would perhaps buy a 5850 if you can find a good deal though. You will always end up having problems running Crossfire because of ATI´s lack of support of driver updates. Just see the problems with Shift. And Nvidia will not be releasing anything new worth mentioning until they replace the GTX 285 and that won´t happen before Fall 2010 I think.

PS: what's your PC's specs? Gigabyte EP45-UD3P motherboard Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 Wolfdale 3.33GHz 4gb of Ram Poul, i was using 1024x768 resolution because of my 22" monitor. I just got back from picking up my new 24" LG HD monitor, and now i have resolution at 1280x720. Ill probably set res. in Shift to the same so i can record in HD. I really do not want to overclock just yet. When i build my gaming computer, then ill try that with this current computer, in case i screw something up. I have read about problems in Shift with ATI cards too, but i dont have to do this right away. I can wait for the new patch to come out and see if it fixes the problems. I just figured if i can get 2 video cards for the price of one and have even better FPS, why not!

Hey Poul,
I did read the article and i am leaning towards the two 5770's. Will my 550w. power supply be enough?
About the resolution, i changed it to 1600x900 earlier today and im still getting the same frame rates! Looks great, so im going to try 1920x1200 tonight.
Lol, im no computer genious by any means. I always thought you should keep the resolution in game the same as your desktop but i never really knew much about this. Guess i learned something today!

Aaron
Always use the same resolution in game as your monitors native resolution. If you bought a 24" screen and it has 1920x1200 or maybe 1920x1080, then use that in game. Only because youtube uses 1280x720 is it a good idea to use that in game if you wanna record something.
I think I read something about 5570 in crossfire used like 380W but I am not sure if that is the whole system or just the graphics cards. I think it´s the whole system, but i will check that tomorrow. I am off to bed now, need my 5 hours of sleep before work.

Aaron I just checked and this is what you need to remember when running 2 video cards - some of these are quite expensive if you game a lot and even when idle. Tested with following system: CPU: Intel Core i7-920 @ 3.33GHz Motherboard: Intel DX58SO (Intel X58) Chipset Drivers: Intel 9.1.1.1015 (Intel) Hard Disk: Intel X25-M SSD (80GB) Memory: Patriot Viper DDR3-1333 3 x 2GB (7-7-7-20)

The system at idle usage is a little higher than i expected.
So i should be ok with the 550 watt supply right? or do you suggest i go bigger to be safe?
I forgot to mention i have a 400 watt, 10" sub speaker system, but the sub woofer box has the amp built into it. I wouldnt think it would draw much amps from the pc, but im not sure. Does anyone else know about this?

550 Watt PSU is more than enough for your PC
