VGSpeedPro mentioned this in his video thread.
For me, ABS off is always faster, at least for the cars I drive (Zonda, SpecV, EVO IX, Cobalt SS, 240SX). The tires never seem to fully lock up, except when the SpecV gets glitched online, and downshifting (see next paragraph) early still helps even when the tires are locked up.
Downshifting early seems to slow down a car even faster. In the Zonda I usually downshift while braking, but in the lower rated cars, I find it better to downshift while at full throttle just before braking, as the game has some type of engine braking limiter (like a slipper clutch), and the braking ends up smoother and faster. Also the EVO IX has a very slow downshift under lift throttle, but downshifts quicker if it's still at full throttle.
With my joysticks, I can't use brake and throttle at the same time, but I suspect that holding both brake and throttle pedals down while downshifting while approaching a turn would work even better.
The other main trick is autoclutch off, manual shift, but don't use cltuch. This results in faster launches, especially with the Zonda. I can start in 3rd place and usually pass the 2 cars in front of me if they aren't using this method. If one or both of them have autoclutch off, then they take off at the same speed. Either way, you usually don't have to worry about collisions as you'll either pass the 2 cars in front because they are barely moving, or the starting gap will remain the same because they also have autoclutch off.
I'm still running 0/1 downforce, although I can now see that lap times on the shorter tracks are better with 2/3 to 4/5 downforce. Tokyo tracks might be able to use even more downforce. My best Willow Spring and Nordschleife times are still with 0/1 downforce though. I think Nordschleife is because it's what I'm used to, but I think Willow end up being fastest with 0/1 because some long key turns are power limited, not grip limited.

I have a couple of questions for your auto-clutch off theory. At the starting line do you do the perfect launch with the perfect RPM or is the tech wide open. I've watch a few of yours and Aaron's video's and the RPM appear to tech out at the starting line?
second question are first and second gears tall or short? after racing with you and Aaron both you guys have a major advantage on the starting line you take off like a bat out of hell. I need to learn your tecnic.

you and Aaron have a major advantage on the starting line Aaron appears to launch faster than me, but that could be lag or difference in setup or he's launching at a higher rpm. I'm launching at "perfect launch" rpm, but it's probably better to launch at a higher rpm. I tried full throttle, but that didn't work well, at least with the car I was using. For the SpecV, I have 1st gear a 3.5, 2nd and 3rd 1 click right, 4th and 5th middle, 6th 1 click left.

For online, i use the same setup as in the inner circle, which is strictly for acceleration. My top speed is only 150mph with SpecV and as you know, i dont use any assists and autoclutch is off. I take off faster than most for some reason, surely im not the only one not using any assists.
The Camaro SS is the only car, so far, that perfect launch works better. Ive tested this with all the cars i use and full throttle at launch is faster for me, but not by much.

I also have all assist turn off, Stability off. TC off, and just until I read this thread of Jeff's did I turn off ABS and auto clutch, plus I am using Aaron's blue prints on the inner circle, The only thing that doesn't match is his acceleration my car tops out at 179 mph.
However I have two favorite 14.0 cars. The SpecV for high speed tracks and the R35 for short tracks.

I don´t get that Sunny. Why is your topspeed that much higher than Aaron´s if you use same setup? My SpecV´s top speed is 246 km/h (152 mp/h) and yours is 179 mp/h (288 km/h)
Did you forget to set downforce to max?

I made an incorrect statement. I still need to set my acceleration all the way to the left. Then my blue prints will match Aaron's blue prints. I guess I wait till tonight to test that. Man won't that be a major change of events me beating Aaron . But then again you guys are all master tuners, and master tuner alway have a secrets that make all the difference. I have bad depth perception on this game with a few tracks that is limiting my ability to be faster, as time goes on I am getting better.

Hey Sunny You could try Rogerio´s SpecV setup in the inner Circle thread. I tested that, and it really is nice and easy to drive. Try it with my G25 and in game settings and tell me if you like them. G25 settings: Overall effects strength - 132 Spring effect strength - 150 Damper effect strength - 150 Centering spring strength - 150 Degrees of rotation - 201 All sensitivity in G25 Logitech profiler on steering wheel, Accelerator, brake and clutch is set for 50% - NOT 100%. In game settings: See picture Steering lock I use 33 but Rogerio use 30 - this is where you have to decide what you feel it best. Tell me what you think. It needs to be Rogerio´s setup. I never tried Aaron´s with these settings - perhaps I should though. Poul

I've been having issue's with auto-clutch off, the car keeps going into neutral in between gears? Whazzz up with that. It only happens on certain tracks and not at all on other tracks. Is this a part of the bug?
Anyway I turn auto-clutch back on till I can figure this out.

i run with ABS on funnly enough.. i have never tried it with it off. but i can keep up with most racers while running it on.
altho i havent raced for a couple of weeks ( currently in japan). i shall experiment with this when i get back.

I just bought the game the other day(at level 20) and have been trying to teach myself to use the clutch on my G25. After reading here I tried shifting with autoclutch off w/o clutching but have noticed with my 2000GT-R it sometimes leads to serious tire spin(I guess from a neutral drop kinda like what Sunny is describing) so I'm back to clutching except on downshifts where there is no way I can keep up with sequential paddle shifting.
Am I the only one using a clutch? I get slightly better upshift times when I just barely tap it.
Oh and Jeff? I brake with my left foot and since the G25 can be configured with separate axes for throttle/brake I can use the brake while under throttle. It seems to help in controlling turns especially with the 2000GT-R. That thing is a beast to handle especially in comparison to my Audi TT. Still its a blast to drive. Ya have to be REAL careful with the throttle, lol.

Oh yeah. I've only done one race online and got my butt handed to me, but should be back in better form soon.
Look me up.
I'll be racing as "MadGuppy"

I tried shifting with autoclutch off w/o clutching but have noticed with my 2000GT-R it sometimes leads to serious tire spin. That's the clutch slipping, not tire spin. The works Camaro SS will do that as well. You just need to lift the throttle during shifts to prevent that. Note that certain combinations of upgrades on some cars, like upgrading power, but not the drivetrain, can result in a clutch that slips much too easily, not allowing you to use nitrous in any gear.

I brake with my left foot and since the G25 can be configured with separate axes for throttle/brake I can use the brake while under throttle. I do the same with keyboard... Left Ctrl is brake and Up Arrow is throttle. Jussi
