For a new game, there hasn't been the same level of activity online or ISRC2 forums as there has been with previous games.
In the case of online play, as mentioned in a thread at ea forums, the lack of a text chat feature, even once in a race, makes the gameplay seem more isolated than previous games. You join a race, a few people leave before the race gets started, and once the race completes most of the rest will leave and look for another race. I also wonder if having autolog showing all the record data is discouraging some players from going online. In my case, because I live in California, my time zone is not great for online racing games, and even with Shift 1, I ended up only going online about once a week.
Still the activity here at ISRC 2 seems down compared to before. With Shift 1, there was a lot of activity with the setups on the cars, and so far, only a few have been posted here.

First of all it is a lack of text chat that kills online experience; secondly in Shift 1 we had stats, I believe, for top 200 players for every single track, in Shi*t 2 we can only access ones of friends + only one top from the region + only one top from the world, but how can you make friends if you can not even chat or talk with them properly or how can you assess performance against other world-class players while having only 20-30 friends on your friends list; thirdly in Shift1 we had 5 classes to compete: 4.00, 6.00, 10.00, 14.00, Unlim in Shift 2 we have only 4 main ones: D,C,B,A, and the A class is screwed cause most of the cars do not even reach 2000 in their performace rating after installing all available upgrades; forth there is not enough money for the most interesting "A" class cars because of the level cap starting at the Level 20, expected to be lifted up to the 30 after the patch or DLC; fifth many of the Shift1 players got the drift and bought PS3 and enjoy online play on the console P.S.> I still enjoy NFS Shift2 game, and I think it is a very good deep racing game worth playing. I am planning to stick to the PC version at least till the end of career mode, and if there will be no online improvements or DLC releases for PC until end of May, I may try out PS3 version thereafter.

The majority of my crew are waiting for a patch and refuse to play it until they fix the steering probs, and one guy can't even load one part of his career without the game crashing, so he's really dirty...
The online is alright when all drivers are on Ventrilo but i do hate it when ya get that one random and he doesn't know how to use brakes on the 1st corner and ya can't get up him over chat!!
The game has big holes, maybe when/if they fix it it might be more popular.

I decided to play through Mass Effect 2 again - just to watch the sex scenes - that´s how bad I think Shift 2 has turned out to be. I want an online chat feature, so that I am able to talk to friends. And I never know if a guy is cheating while racing. I see that Infel8 from Wrecord has started programming a WRclient program for Shift 2 - then I will start competing again - thanks Infel8 for taking your time to do something that EA should have been doing from the start.

I am with this guy, tired of the steering wheel issue, I didn't have any problem with my wheel until I tried to go online and race and ever since then my steering wheel has to be setup every time I race, I also agree without the chatt box the online experiance is gone... I want an online chat feature, so that I am able to talk to friends. When I first saw that there was no chat in this game, I wasn’t sure why. Was it because… A) …the chat is often abused to curse at people and throwing unjust claims of cheating around. B) …they just didn’t bother implementing the feature. Reason A would be plausible, had it not been for the fact that we can’t even send messages to the ones on our friends list. It just baffles me that we can’t go on Autolog, select a friend, and send a message to that friend. Of course, such a feature would still be an abhorrent alternative to a chat box in the online lobby, but it would be the least we could expect when there is no other chat or message function in the game. That’s why I think reason B is the real reason. I don’t think some executive put his foot down and said that the game would be best without a chat option. I think they just focused on getting the game out and just skipped the parts they knew wouldn’t give them bad reviews and/or poor sales. Nobody’s going to say "Hmm, that Shift 2 looks good, but I heard there’s no chat online, so I won’t buy it". No, they buy it, discover the lack of chat, become displeased and then they buy Shift 3. Edit: I added a poll on the official forums for text chat. It probably won't matter, but I still hope to see the "Yes"-side heavily outnumber the rest. I had to type it in on my mobile phone since I can't access ea.com on my work comp, so I don't have a direct link. Hopefully you'll still find it and put in a vote for change.

The chat window is very important, whether positive or negative.a few words and you know what you're!It has helped my steering wheel shift 1 to survive, not to end up with rage at the wall.I play the moment the career have a lot of very fast friends in my list Beating the guys is a good challenge ! can not play online I have the same problem as the monster cars are not navigable NO FEELING ONLINE I wait for the patch and if it does not improve I'm going back to SHIFT1 or try something else. TomasT drives netcarpro is not pretty but the control is very demanding maybe an alternative!!
Edit:The game is not finished at all, They have f**ked us again!!! sorry Michael

In the online racing without the chat, it's more like you're racing AI cars than other people, and there's no messenger function anymore. The online menu systems in Underground 2 and Most Wanted were much better than what we have now. It started with Carbon when they removed having a list of rooms, and ProStreet (now shutdown due to lack of activity) was worse because 2 or more players had to pick the exact same event in order for a room to be created, no matter how many were online looking for races.
At least Shift 2 has a list of rooms for unranked mode in it's browse feature, but it really needs a chat feature for players waiting in that lobby with the list of rooms.
I'm also wondering if some players are getting a bit burnt out on racing games and/or having to deal with the issues in each new racing game (like the steering / yaw issues in Shift 2). I've been playing racing games since 1997 (unless you count Stunts), and a few here have been around since Most Wanted and Carbon were out.

A) …the chat is often abused to curse at people and throwing unjust claims of cheating around. B) …they just didn’t bother implementing the feature. I recon you're right with A which is the reason they chose B. Car racing games need dedicated servers and admin programs, like FPS games, that would make the whole experience much more pleasurable all around. Unfortunately, online car games are still in the dark ages!!!

Unfortunately, online car games are still in the dark ages! Except it's the "dark ages" when the racing games did have a proper lobby chat, like Underground 2 and older NFS games, even High Stakes (1999) had a lobby chat area.

If you guys like, i can extend an invite to www.MatureAnzacGamers.com Ventrilo. We have a Shift 2 channel we use, it makes it much more fun giving each other heaps while chasing each other around. Some may have ping issues as it's in Australia but we have American, Chinese and others able to chat no probs. The details are in the Public forums for Ventrilo, jump on and i can get you in channel, put (Att: Tank.) in your comment on vent

Steering is the main issue for me, i can deal with no chat although it would be nice. I have a feeling this will be the last NFS game i buy for a while until they get their heads out of their asses.
If they didnt charge a monthly fee, i would be playing iracing. Looking forward to Dirt3 now.
Revit, thanks for the offer, very cool of you! If they get this game fixed i would like to try it.

I added a poll on the official forums for text chat. I had to type it in on my mobile phone since I can't access ea.com on my work comp, so I don't have a direct link. Hopefully you'll still find it and put in a vote for change. Thx, Skroting, here is the link: forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/5605514.pageBut, personally, I think that omission of NFS in-game chat function has a lot to do with the recent investigations in child pedophilia when older folks try to get in touch with under-aged using game chats and messaging and then lure them into illegal and abnormal activities. It is real and very serious problem and many rightfully think that health of our children is more important than comfort of in-game communication. P.S.> Even me, I experienced it while playing ProStreet, when I was pretending to be 12 years old racer in online chat room. I got 2-3 friends invitation from my co-racers, then PM to join their Facebook page, then I saw that those folks are over 45, then I broke contact to those guys. I do not know what were their intentions, but I felt it "dirty" that 50 year old folks want to make close friendships with small kids.
